Ganderbal, Jan 02 (KNO): The residents of Urpash village in Ganderbal district are struggling with a severe drinking water shortage, which is further intensifying the challenges of the ongoing harsh winter season. Despite the village being surrounded by abundant water resources, the residents are unable to access clean drinking water, which is significantly impacting their health and daily lives. Tariq Ahmad, a local, told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), “We are forced to rely on contaminated water sources, which is taking a toll on our health. The authorities must take immediate action to address this crisis and ensure that we have access to clean drinking water.” The village, located near abundant natural water sources, is facing a critical shortage due to frozen pipes and inadequate infrastructure. Many villagers have resorted to using unsafe water from nearby streams, leading to concerns over waterborne diseases, he said. To combat this ongoing crisis, the villagers have appealed to the Jal Shakti department for urgent intervention. They have suggested the installation of a pipeline from the nearby power canal to a local spring, which would provide a more reliable and safe water supply to the community. An official said that the priority is to resolve the water crisis in Urpash. “We are actively working on the necessary arrangements, and this issue will be addressed as soon as possible,” the official said—(KNO)
